Experience
I'm a lot better at teaching one on one. I've never had an official job as a tutor, but I've always been able to help friends in classes that they had trouble with. I think that the thing that helps me the most is that I can usually look at something and figure out a different way to explain it, so that the person who is having trouble isn't just hearing the same thing over and over, which obviously that isn't very helpful. Also, since I have a degree in early childhood education, I've had lots of experience working with really young kids. In my opinion, if you can explain something to a little kid, then you can explain it to anyone. Being able to simplify things is a skill that is important in tutoring. I am the sort of person that learns and understands better in a less formal environment, and in smaller groups. I understand how hard it can be to be in a whole class that gets something when you just don't. The ways that I've found to learn can help other people who are in a similar situation. I want to be a tutor for two reasons. One, I need a job. But two, and more importantly, I really enjoying helping people understand things that they have trouble with. I enjoy the "aha" moment they have when they finally get it. In my classroom experiences my favorite thing to help out with was second and third grade reading and math. In older grades, I really enjoy science and history.
